FIRST TIME HERE?

Whether you're brand new to the sport or just to our gym, here's some helpful info on getting started at Open Source Jiu-Jitsu.
Which class should I choose?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

While we welcome adults of all levels to all of our classes, we recommend that beginners get the meat and potatoes of BJJ by going to our Fundamentals BJJ classes. This is where you'll learn and practice techniques that you'll continue to use no matter what your level. These classes are attended by all belt levels.

We recommend you have a few classes under your belt before attending Competition Training or Open Mats.

Judo

Our Judo classes are appropriate for all levels. Our coaches and fellow judokas will make sure you know the important things, like how to fall without getting hurt, proper stance, and grips.

What's the deal with memberships?

No contracts. No memberships. Really.

Designed for people who want options. The option to pay by the class. The option to use a punch card. The option to have a more traditional-looking monthly membership. We've got you covered.

Check out our Class Pass options here.

Pay-what-you-want classes

We believe Jiu-Jitsu and Judo should be for everyone, no matter what their budget. To put our money where our mouth is, we offer our Fundamentals BJJ, Judo and Open Mats on a pay-what-you-want basis.

Common questions from beginners

What is a "gi" and do I need to bring my own?

A gi is the uniform that we wear for some BJJ classes and all Judo classes. We've got loaner gis here that you can use free of charge for your first few classes.

What should I wear?

Wear athletic clothing that's comfortable to move around in. A tighter-fitting shirt with sleeves (even short sleeves) that is not low-cut and not a crop top is usually best. For the bottoms, leggings or shorts that are not super loose work well. Wear or bring sandals that are easy to slip on and off.

I've got lots more questions!

We know. :) Check out our FAQ page for lots of answers. And if it's not there, shoot us an email or a message on Instagram or Facebook.
