Grapple for Good is a non-traditional, fun (“not-so-serious”) Jiu-Jitsu tournament to benefit Homeward Bound of Western North Carolina. While the tournament itself follows a more traditional rule-set, competitors are encouraged to get creative with their attire and have fun while competing in a friendly manner to help better serve less fortunate members of our community.

Date: October 21, 2023 * 1-4 PM
Location: Open Source Jiu-Jitsu • 357 Gorman Bridge Rd, Asheville NC
Registration Deadline: Friday, Oct 20, 2023 * 8 PM
Benefitting Homeward Bound WNC

"We’re a nonprofit organization ending homelessness in Buncombe and Henderson Counties of North Carolina. More than that, we’re non-judgmental staff, volunteers, board members, and people knowledgeable in social work disciplines who believe in the “Housing First” national best practice for ending homelessness. Mostly, we’re people who care about the most vulnerable among us enough to do something about it."

100% of proceeds from Grapple for Good go to Homeward Bound

Anyone from any school and any level is invited to participate and have fun all while helping community members in need. This is an "absolute" only competition which means there are no weight/age/level divisions - just ONE division. Kids are welcome to sign up if their parents sign off, however they will be competing against adults.

Spectators are encouraged to come and support their friends, support Homeward Bound and simply have a good time supporting the Asheville BJJ community.

The scoring system identically follows the IBJJF rule set, as you would see it implemented in the brown/black belt no-gi divisions, with some notable exceptions, regarding grips and uniforms (see below).

Competitors are encouraged to get creative with their attire: tuxedos, prom dresses, Halloween costumes… it’s all good! During the competition, fighters are allowed to grab, pull and twist on anything attached to their opponents’ bodies (with the exception of rash guards and other undergarments) so please avoid wearing anything sharp or otherwise hazardous to grapplers. Furthermore, Open Source Jiu-Jitsu will provide backup attire should you not have an outfit or if your clothes get torn badly during competition.

Saturday, October 21, 2023 ~ Time: 1:00-4:00 PM. Competitors must arrive between 12:00-12:30 PM to go over the rules, warm up, ask questions and meet-and-greet. We'll probably wrap up by 4:00 PM-ish.

Open Source Jiu-Jitsu • 357 Gorman Bridge Rd, Asheville NC 28806

Participants are asked to make a minimum donation of $40 to participate. Spectators are free but are encouraged to donate a suggested admission fee of $15. 100% of registration fees  and donations will go to Homeward Bound WNC and their programs assisting community members who are homeless in Buncombe and Henderson Counties.

*Registration for the Absolute Open division will ONLY be on Smoothcomp this year!*

You must register online via Smoothcomp before the tournament. There is a 32 person limit to the Absolute Open bracket. There will be no same-day, in-person registration option.
