BJJ INTENTIONAL

WHO WE ARE

We are a Jiu-Jitsu-based intentional community. We live, train and work together on what we affectionately call “The Compound”, here in Asheville, North Carolina, USA. We are not a cult, although I understand that this is something people who are part of a cult might say. Rather, we are just a group of community members who are really into BJJ...so, OK, I guess we are a cult after all. We host folks both long-term and short-term alike.

The Gym

We started Open Source Jiu-Jitsu in the summer of 2017 in a large warehouse right here on the property. We are a completely unaffiliated jiu-jitsu gym located about ten minutes from downtown Asheville. We offer “pay-what-you-want” fundamentals BJJ classes and various supplemental classes such as advanced BJJ, open mats and Judo.

The Compound

Our little slice of heaven here in Asheville consists of Open Source Jiu-Jitsu, a BJJ-themed campground called Baying Hound Campground, a bunkhouse, a stationary RV, and our home. Our visitors and members will usually choose to stay in the bunkhouse or in their own dwelling structure (converted van/bus, RV, tent etc). The campground is located in a lush 2-acre valley only steps away from the gym. We've got traditional tent camping as well as creative tent-less camping structures.

WHAT'S THE DEAL

VISITORS

Check out Open Source BJJ and the Compound for yourself. We're happy to hang out, give tours and show folks around. Book a spot at our campground and train BJJ, enjoy Asheville, and explore the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Let us know you're interested in the BJJ Community and we'll give you a discount!

WORK EXCHANGE

There is no money involved, not even cryptocurrency!

WHAT YOU GIVE

You will commit to working 15-20 hrs/wk, engaging in various labor around The Compound. Common tasks include basic yard work (raking, mowing, weeding, etc), gardening, building new structures, fixing stuff, painting, landscaping, cleaning, maintenance, campground help and pretty much anything else you might imagine. Some of your hours could go toward teaching/leading class.

WHAT YOU GET

You will receive a nice, warm, dry bed, a cooked meal twice a week, and optional groceries. Most likely you will be staying in the bunkhouse with other people, but if you happen to have your own set-up, you would obviously have a spot on the property all to yourself. You would also have access to all amenities which includes 24/7 access to the gym, the campground, bathhouse, and multiple chill spots around the property.

INTERESTED IN A VISIT?

Whether you’re coming through for just a week, or you’re interested in the possibility of joining our community, we love hosting visitors. It’s just one of the many things we do here.
